About The Department
The department of Sociology and Social Anthropology was established in 1969. It is unique insofar as it brings together two disciplines, or two intellectual orientations, in its teaching and research. This is indeed rare in the context of Indian universities where social anthropology is usually assigned to the Department of Anthropology. The Department has devised a unique combination of field work and classroom teaching allowing its students to relate sociological concepts and theories with real life issues. At present, the Department has four faculty members, one Associate Professor and three Assistant Professors. The faculty and students in the department have conducted research on many contemporary social issues of Indian society in general and Punjabi society in particular. Sociologically important fields of social inequality, digital divide, social change, political sociology, sports sociology, sociology of media and Information technologies, disability studies, environment sociology, rural sociology, women studies, gender and caste disparities, denotified tribes, etc., have been of significant interest to the department. All the faculty members are well-qualified and experienced with a wide range of publications in their respective fields.
The syllabus taught by the faculty is regularly revised and updated keeping in mind the career options for the studentsand the emerging new trends in Sociology. With the help of dedicated faculty and staff along with basic infrastructural facilities including a rich departmental library and a seminar room, the department provides a congenial atmosphere for research.
The department is well recognised for its research in the region. The department was notified as the State Social Impact Assessment Unit by the Government of Punjab in 2014. In 2021 with the help of the state government a Centre for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities was also started in the department.
